History

Located at Exhibition Place in Toronto, BMO Field is Canada’s first soccer-specific stadium and plays home to Canada’s National soccer team, the Toronto Argonauts as well as Toronto FC, Canada’s first Major League Soccer team. It was built at a cost of $62.9 million and funded by a unique public partnership between three levels of government and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment LTD.

In its inaugural summer, BMO Field (known to FIFA as Canada’s National Soccer Stadium) hosted over 260,000 fans during 12 games as the main venue for the FIFA U-20 World Cup. On September 7th, 2007, Phil Collins and Genesis took the stage in front of a capacity crowd of more than 28,000 fans.

Since 2007, BMO Field has welcomed over a million fans and has hosted a multitude of events including the 2016 Grey Cup, MLS Cup in 2016, the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, and International Rugby and Lacrosse games.

In 2010, a natural grass pitch was installed along with a state of the art heating system that allows grass to grow in colder spring and fall months.

2014 saw BMO Field embark on its biggest venture yet. With the goal to rival the prestige of European soccer stadiums, ground was broken on the 2-phase expansion. When phase 1 was completed on May 10th 2015, a total of 8,400 seats were added along with new and updated clubs and suites, just to name a few upgrades. To complete the renovation, a canopy will be raised to cover the grandstands in 2015, completing phase 2 and the entire $120 million undertaking.

2015 also marked another milestone for BMO Field – the announcement that The Toronto Argonauts were moving in. An additional modification to BMO Field will soon be completed to accommodate the Argos for the 2016 CFL season.
